Why is the secret of living a purposeful life

After a breakdown, I discovered my why was key to a life with purpose. The same month the work of Simon Sinek gave me the tools to find it. But it was not before I came across a 3-Day Digital Business Course that I set the next step. Today I’m a life coach and digital business owner.

What’s your why? Maybe the single most important question in your quest to happiness. But also when you want to start a successful business. Someone who made this idea his life mission was Simon Sinek. “Everything I do is devoted to one idea: to inspire people to do what inspires them, so that we can together change the world for the better.” Starting with why is so much more compelling than starting with what. Compare ‘we sell beautiful phones’ with ‘we inspire human interaction’. Why speaks to your emotions, while what speaks to your brain. Great companies as Apple and Nike all start with why.

What about great leaders, they don’t give you a list of what they want to achieve. Martin Luther King said “I have a dream that one day…”. Simon Sinek says: : “People don’t buy your product, they buy what you do.” He says too: “Discovering your why is like panning in the river of the past for gold.” It takes time but you know that it’s there.

When I was a copywriter I had no idea about my why. I just wanted to earn money. But underneath I was unhappy and unfulfilled. One day I saw a short YouTube video with the idea of Simon Sinek.  After that, I started looking for my why. I found out: I wanted To help people believe in themselves So That they can live a life worth living too.

Ikigai: how to find your life’s purpose

After being stuck in my 9-5 job. I needed a burn-out to wake me up. It was only then that I took the time to go and travel to Bali. I went to Africa to enjoy the beach and snorkel in the ocean. But most important: I started looking at what kind of job could give me fulfilment.

To live a long and happy life, that’s where the Japanese concept Ikigai stands for. It’s a treasure guide to find your life’s purpose. A job is what you do to pay the bills. Work, on the other hand, is there to achieve a purpose or a result. That could be a more meaningful you.

Where does Ikigai come from? It’s originated in Okinawa: the most over 100 year old live here. But besides Ikigai there’s another thing from Okinawa: Karate. It literally means: empty hands. Ikigai means: life’s worth.

Ikigai has 4 directions:

•          Do what you love

•          Do what you’re good at

•          Do what the world needs

•          Do what you can be rewarded for

I got my yellow belt in Ikigai in my fourth year in college.  I did choose to be a copywriter. I read all about it. And took all the effort to get a job in advertising. But after some time doing it. A question in my mind kept repeating: why am I doing this?

Just this last year I have found what my Ikigai is. I want to help people find their purpose.  How would I do that? By being a life coach and create value with a digital business.
